Support Attendance at the Parole Board
- I go to every Texas Parole Board Office and TDCJ unit. Non-attorney services are not authorized to argue for an offender's parole. I prefer in person meetings over zoom calls because I am already at the nearby units (seeing other clients in person). Many presentations can benefit from in person communication.
- Lead Parole Voters are under no obligation to speak to anyone on the offender’s side when reviewing a parole file. It is the Lead Parole Voter’s discretion to grant or deny any in person presentation request. My experience is that all of the Lead Parole Voters are generous with their time and welcoming to personal interaction. I make my presentations directly to the lead voter of the case at the time when the file is being evaluated and voted at the regional parole board office. In many cases, support is approved to attend with me. I suggest a few rules of courtesy to make the presentations more professional and polite. This approach allows for better communication and interaction with the overall parole review process.
- Rules for in Person Board Presentations
- 1. No victims or codefendants at my presentations. This is not the trial court and there is no Affidavit for Non-Prosecution. A support letter saying you support release and have no safety concerns is the correct approach for this message.
- 2. No one extra in the waiting room. Maximum two persons that sign that they are coming. They sign; they come; and they come prepared to answer any question from the Parole Board. Arguments are capped at 20 minutes and there is plenty to cover. Everyone else should wait in the parking lot or come after. If there is more than two in the waiting room, we are doing it wrong. This is government and the governance must be respected for us to be persuasive.
- 3. Come 10 minutes early. Respect the time. Saying thank you only matters if we act thankful for the time.
- 4. What to say? Be prepared to share: • The changes you have seen in your loved one;
- • Why you feel your loved one is ready for parole; and
- • What is available to your loved one when they get out?
